Well its been a busy year, I have taken on a new job, which sees me flying to and from the States and back and forth to India.  I would just like to say a big thank you to my wife and family who have mantained my fly business whilst I travel.  The only trouble with that, is the lack of fishing time.  However I hope to spend some time with my old freind Dennis in up state New York for some fishing on one of my trips.  I am looking forward to my first outing. I have just replaced my Dry line after two years of usage and looking forward to the rented cotaage with its own Lake with Brown’s and Rainbows in.  We are spending a long weekend end with my Parents, my daughter who is in her second year Uni and her sister for a well earned break.  I have a number of new patterns to try and will report back after the trip.  Good luck and tight lines to you all for the new season.

Catching in the cold

Sitting at home after catching a cold (Man Flu) , I thought it was time for a new post.   This cold weather should not stop you venturing out for good sport on our small stillwaters.  Although the minus double digit figures over the past few weeks causes your line to freeze in the rings and fishing impossible.  This weekend however sees the return of positive temperatures and therefore a break from the nightmare Christmas shopping and out for some fantastic sport.  I find stripping brightly coloured lures is always a good tactic to try first (and if the temperature is around zero, first thing, it keeps the line from freezing in the rings!).   Change your lures regularly until you find out which lures are followed and which gain hits in these clear cold waters they are easy to see. I find the Rainbow Trout at their best in these conditions they don’t seem to fight any less in the cold and take very aggressively.  My favourite lures are  orange, black and yellow fritz blobs, Cats Whiskers, Dawson’s Olive  and Wooly Bugger patterns as well as the tried and test black and green goldhead fritz lures in particular at my local lake.  If you manage to get out of shopping and go fishing, good luck and tight lines.  I am looking forward to my weekend.

Its the end of the season, time to renew your tired flies, lines and tackle

I took a novice fishing for his first trip the other day. The destination was the bottom lake at Heathcote Fisheries, Warwick. I arrived a couple of hours before him and faced a difficult challenge. The waters were quite heavy with algae, there was a strong wind and intermittant heavy showers . I fished without a break until he arived with no fish and no knocks, I had tried all my favourites which have produced on this lake previously, but to no avail. My friend arrived and we spent 20 minutes learning to cast. After that I added a Green GH Montana to his line and I tried a orange Blob to mine.

Success first cast on the Blob a 1 1/2 lb rainbow in fantastic condition. We changed my friends lure to an orange Goldhead Fritz. And after ten minutes (and another fsh for me) he caught his first ever trout (1 1/2 lb rainbow). This was followed up about an  hour later by a second fish. I took my bag limit (5) on various orange patterns .  My friend had 2 nice rainbows on his first outing.  A very successful trip.

I have added a number of good quality  lines to my tackle range which come with free backing and a tippet  (they have just won a number of TROUT Fishermen magazine best buy awards).  I have a number of new flies I will also be adding by the end of this month.  I just have to organise taking the photos and adding them to the database.  The new flies include a number of  TRICO patterns and some Sulphur coloured dries as well as some new epoxy buzzers including  yellow and bloodworm variations.  I have also increased the hook sizes range across a number of patterns.  If you see a pattern you want, but its not in the size you want.  I will increase the range where ever possible.

I have also decided to add Salmon flies to my range.  I have identified  10 differnt patterns to date  and will be stocking them in Single and Double hook versions before the end of November.  I am not a Salmon fisherman, however if you are and would like to help me by suggestlng any patterns you use or would like to see.  Please email me with your suggestions.

Well thats all for now.

Thanks

Somewhere over a Rainbow

May 19th, 2010

Visit my store www.stampsandflies.co.uk. Buzzers, Dry flies, Nymphs and Wets from 25p , lures from 30p.

My third trip out this season, what a fantastic day. The weatherman forecast rain but I am pleased to say the BBC got it wrong and I had glorious sunshine with only the occasional cloud passing by. I arrived at 10:00, the location as usual was Packington Lakes near Coventry. A short drive through the deer inhabited grounds brought me to the first of the big member pools, Hall Lake, where there were 2 people on the lake and a further two just setting up as I arrived. They headed to the top of the lake near the dam wall. I followed them up. A slight breeze did not impact casting but gave a nice ripple on the surface. I could see the other anglers were slow retrieving nymphs and buzzer fishing. I went for my favourite painted eye nobbler, black, retieved fast. After three casts I caught my first Rainbow; 2 1/2 lbs and a fantastic fight. I quickly released the fish and continued to cast. 5 minutes later I hit a big fish on the same lure, but to my annoyance it snaped the line and unfortunately kept the lure. I had debarbed the hook so hopefully it would soon loose the lure. Disaster then struck, I had only brought one painted eye nobbler. I was so annoyed, it’s not as if I don’t have over 60,000 different flies, buzzers, nymphs, wets and lures in stock!!!!! I tried another similar lure which had silver nymph streamer eyes, but no luck. After 15 minutes I went back to the fly boxes and found an old short-shank, leadhead lure with the painted eyes worn off and with a blue flash in the tail. Immediate results with a smaller rainbow just under 21bs safely netted and released. I hooked another a few minutes later but lost it off the hook. Within the half hour I had a further 2 1/4 lb fish. It then went dead for about 50 minutes, no knocks at all. Time to change lure again. Last year I fished the main public lake and like everyone on the water caught nothing despite changing patterns every fifteen minutes. We stopped for lunch and went back to the hut for a hot drink; back out after lunch I tried a white Zonker for the first time. Immediate reults and after 4 frantic hours we had reached our catch and release quota. So I decided to try it on this lake. A quick hit signalled two hours of great fun with fish to 3lb. Unfortunately I deep hooked 1 fish and it would not recover so I took it home for tea. In total I caught seven good Rainbows in 4 1/2 hours and home by 3pm with time to spare to cut the lawns.

Tackle 10ft 7/8 Sonik 4 piece rod Vision reel floating line with a 5ft sinker lead with a 10ft 61b leader.
